Founded by Kamijiro Sugiura in the 1950s in Tajimi, Gifu, a city renowned for ceramics, the company began as a tile manufacturer for homes and spaces. Unlike most Japanese tile makers, it takes pride in overseeing every step of production in-house, from design and pressing to glazing and kiln firing. Sugy, its lifestyle brand, was born from a desire to show those unfamiliar with tiles what makes them special. Its distinctive glazes, traditionally found on tiles, are applied to lifestyle products, giving the familiar a rare character.
